MERCHANT NAVY DECK OFFICER

The deck officer is responsible for navigating the vessel at sea and for loading and unloading operations on all types of vessels. He begins his career as a trainee officer, then progresses to lieutenant, first mate and captain. Depending on their role on board, they may be in charge of the infirmary, chart correction, fire safety, etc. They report to the captain, who oversees all departments on board

Qualities and skills

  • Suitability for working at sea
  • Ensuring the ship stays on course
  • Carrying out day-to-day navigation
  • Supervising the ship’s departure and arrival manoeuvres
  • Issue orders
  • Look after small equipment
  • Supervising the use of the first-aid kit and medical care
  • Organise safety drills
  • Monitor the loading and unloading of the vessel whilst at berth

Educational and training requirements

5½ years after A-levels to obtain the DESMM (Higher Education Diploma in Merchant Shipping) and the title of engineer from the ENSM (École nationale supérieure maritime). Admission based on application via the Parcoursup platform.

5 years of post-A-level study: Engineering degree from the École nationale supérieure maritime; Higher Education Diploma in Merchant Shipping

Sectors and companies

Merchant navy officers are responsible for navigating the vessel and supervising the crew. They may work in a wide variety of sectors: container ships, cruise ships, ferries, the oil industry and maritime services.
