Description

The deckhand assists with mooring manoeuvres whenever the vessel sets sail or drops anchor. Responsible for the vessel’s upkeep, they must also carry out minor repairs, painting work, etc. As a member of the crew, they carry out these tasks under the supervision of an officer.

Educational and training qualifications

CAP or equivalent CAP in Nautical/Maritime Maintenance

Baccalaureate or equivalent vocational baccalaureate in marketing and catering services / management and operation of maritime enterprises / cyber security, IT and networks, electronics / marine electromechanics / nautical maintenance / electrical trades and related connected systems; or a general vocational baccalaureate in deck and engine room operations

Oil tankers, gas carriers, container ships, cruise ships, ferries… deckhands work on all types of vessels carrying goods or passengers. In coastal shipping, the vessel remains close to the coast. On long-haul voyages, the vessel undertakes transoceanic crossings. Destinations include domestic, European or even more distant locations.
