CUSTOMS AGENT
A ship’s agent, also known as a shipping agent, represents the shipowner in the port where they operate. They collect the documents required for the carriage of goods and ensure the optimal use of the ship’s cargo space. Their expertise covers technical, practical and administrative aspects during a ship’s port call.

Education and training
In theory, no specific qualification is required, as the profession is learnt ‘on the job’. However, a two-year post-A-level qualification is recommended, such as the BTS in Transport and Logistics Management, or the diploma from the ITIP (National Institute of International Transport and Ports). With a three-year post-A-level qualification: BUT in Logistics and Transport Management.
Sectors and companies
To meet the needs of an increasingly demanding clientele, shipowners call upon the ship’s agent. The ship’s agent therefore works in a shipping agency or a maritime agency, under contract with shipowners.
