A dispatcher is a transport coordinator. As a specialist in on-dock logistics, they supervise and monitor the movement of goods prior to delivery. At a terminal, they are also known as a container yard planner. They optimise the storage of containers and their removal by lorry, barge or train.

• Determine and allocate the necessary human and material resources to fulfil the requested service
• Contact colleagues and external stakeholders: customers, subcontractors, intermediaries, authorities, etc.
• Ensure the efficient use of equipment, minimising empty-run kilometres
• Respond to unforeseen events promptly in order to guarantee the service or at least minimise the impact of the incident
• Report recurring problems to line management to find sustainable solutions

Educational and training requirements

A-level equivalent: Vocational A-level in Logistics / Freight Transport Organisation; 2 years’ post-A-level study: Higher National Diploma (HND) in Transport Management and Associated Logistics / International Trade; Professional qualifications: Road Freight Transport Operations Manager / Air or Sea Freight Transport Organiser; 3 years’ post-A-level study: Various university-level professional bachelor’s degrees in commerce, transport (domestic and international) and distribution logistics; BUT in logistics and transport management / industrial logistics quality and organisation
