MERCHANT NAVY MECHANICAL OFFICER

The engineer officer is responsible for operating and maintaining the machinery that provides power for all the ship’s operations. He begins his career as an engineer cadet, then progresses to engineer officer, second engineer and chief engineer. Depending on their role on board, they are responsible for the main propulsion engines, the electricity generators, fuel supply (bunkering), etc.

Qualities and skills

  • Good physical stamina
  • Ability to work at sea
  • Technical skills (knowledge of techniques and technologies related to the maritime sector / ability to adapt to the varying power requirements of different ships)
  • Substantial experience in the engine department

Education and training

Bac + 3: training programmes for the role of chief engineer are available at merchant navy colleges as part of a three-year general initial training course or a two-year specialised further training course. Admission is subject to certain conditions.

Sectors and employers

All shipowners and maritime shipping companies are likely to recruit merchant navy engineering officers. With over 12,500 French seafarers, the maritime trade is doing rather well in France. Furthermore, French merchant navy officers benefit from career opportunities with high salaries due to the global shortage of personnel.
