BRIDGE OPERATOR, LOCK KEEPER, REGULATOR

The lock keeper, also known as a waterway or seaport operations officer, is responsible for regulating boat traffic on waterways. They operate bridges and locks in coordination with the harbour master’s office and the port’s safety and security services.

Qualities and skills

  • Diligence and precision
  • Availability
  • Good interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer service
  • Proficiency in the operation of the lock and its machinery, and the ability to manoeuvre the structure
  • Knowledge of the basics of navigation regulations
  • Manage river traffic passing through the structure
  • Guide the manoeuvres of vessels
  • Carry out water flow regulation operations
  • Carry out maintenance work on the structure, its buildings and the surrounding area

Educational and training requirements

Minimum CAP qualification. Must hold a swimming certificate (minimum 25 metres). Entry via civil service competitive examination, either internal or external. Category C post: local authority technical assistant

Sectors and organisations

They may work on navigable waterways or in seaports. In Le Havre, it is HAROPA PORT that employs lock operators and regulators.
