Crane operators are responsible for lifting, loading, unloading, transhipping and positioning very heavy and bulky materials. They operate large-scale material-handling machinery, including overhead travelling cranes, gantry cranes and other specialised equipment.

• Carry out first-level maintenance
• Check that equipment, machinery and installations comply with regulations

Educational and training requirements

This role is open to those with a CAP or BEP qualification in electrical engineering, electromechanics or industrial maintenance.

It is also open to those without a qualification or professional experience.

Certificates of Competence in Safe Operation (CACES) are required to operate motorised machinery (overhead travelling cranes, mobile cranes, etc.)

Many companies employ crane operators: rail, river and maritime freight companies; industrial, public sector, manufacturing, materials handling and lifting firms; and equipment hire companies.
