RAILWAY TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

The train dispatcher is responsible for ensuring the safety and management of train movements within a specific sector assigned to them. They are the professional who ensures a high level of safety for all operations relating to train movements and work carried out on or alongside railway tracks.

Qualities and skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Initiative, decision-making and the ability to anticipate
  • Knowledge of the railway traffic regulations
  • Organisation and operation of the rail network
  • Use of automated electromechanical points control systems
  • Proficiency in using the traffic monitoring and control console
  • Use of radio communication equipment• Rules governing the operation of a rail network control centre (station, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the principles of customer relations

Educational and training requirements

Two or three years’ higher education preferred, regardless of specialism. Followed by in-house training, on a work-study basis.

Sectors and organisations

Rail traffic controllers work in all rail companies, whether public or private, involved in passenger or freight transport.
