In a petrochemical company, the operator works in the production unit that processes crude oil into various products: fuel oil, kerosene, petrol and paraffin. They monitor the condition of the equipment, adjust valves and check pressure levels to ensure the unit runs smoothly. They may also monitor the equipment via control screens.

Education and training

A-level equivalent: Vocational A-level in Heating, Air Conditioning and Renewable Energy Installation / Chemical, Water and Paper and Board Processes

Two years’ further education (Bac + 2): Higher National Diploma (BTS) in the design and implementation of automated systems / chemical industries

Bac + 3: Various Bachelor’s degrees (BUT): physical measurements (various specialisations) / energy transition and efficiency (various specialisations)

‘Refinery operators work outdoors whatever the weather, day or night. They work in a challenging, noisy and hazardous environment. A refinery never stops running. Operators work in three eight-hour shifts, i.e. three successive teams, each working for 8 hours out of every 24. They also work three out of every five weekends… and on some public holidays.
