The technician’s role is to work on companies’ IT, communications and telecommunications networks. They are responsible for installing and configuring equipment, but must also carry out system maintenance, advise users and anticipate potential incidents.

Educational qualifications and training

Two years’ higher education: Numerous BTS (Higher Technical Certificates) in cyber security, IT and networks; DEUST (Diploma of Scientific and Technical University Studies) in information systems, digital technology and electronics

Two years’ higher education: A wide range of BUT (University Technical Diploma) programmes in networks and telecommunications; a wide range of professional bachelor’s degrees in home automation/communications, embedded systems/IT networks and telecommunications, automated systems, and IT project coordination

Sectors and employers

They may be employed by an installation company, usually an SME. They may also be employed by an end-user organisation or a service provider. At a telecoms operator, they will be responsible for infrastructure maintenance.
