The Suez Canal has opened a new 10-kilometre section of two-way traffic in the south, near Lake Amler. An operational trial enabled two ships to pass through this new section.

This expansion was fast-tracked following the grounding of the container ship Ever Given in 2021. The total length of the two-way section has thus been extended to 82 km. The Suez Canal measures a total of 193 km.

Investment maintained despite financial difficulties

Investment has continued despite financial difficulties.

The fall in maritime traffic is estimated at over 60 per cent, due to the rise in piracy by the Houthis in the Red Sea. This represents a shortfall of nearly $7 billion for Egypt.

The geopolitical context, notably the ceasefire in Gaza, could allow for a gradual return to normality, although shipowners remain cautious.
