The Customs Declarant qualification and continuing professional development programme, leading to a two-year post-A-level professional qualification, offered by Scholar Fab in partnership with the Maritime and Port Union (UMEP) and the Union of Freight Forwarders and Customs Agents (STH), is available as a one-year work-study programme, or as a continuing professional development course for professionals already employed by a freight forwarder or customs agent, totalling 285 hours over two years.

A sector that is recruiting

This course, which meets the needs of the maritime and industrial-port sectors against a backdrop of increasing globalisation of trade, aims to provide leading expertise in the complex field of customs declarations. The courses are taught exclusively by officers from the Le Havre Customs Administration and professional customs declarants.

The role of the customs agent is to act as the link between client companies and the customs service. They are responsible for all the regulatory customs and health formalities required when goods are dispatched, in transit or received. The customs agent also checks that exported or imported goods comply with regulations.

Throughout the process, the customs agent keeps the client informed of the progress of the delivery and of any potential delays.

The Maritime Transport and Logistics sector accounts for over 22,000 direct jobs and contributes 40 per cent to the regional economy in Normandy. The training programme offered by Scholar Fab boasts an overall employment rate of 88.5 per cent.

The two-year work-study degree programme

The Customs Broker diploma programme focuses on three main areas: completing customs formalities, advising clients and resolving disputes. Thanks to the practical nature of this programme, combined with their work experience in a company, work-study students are ready to enter the workforce as soon as they graduate.

The course is delivered on the Le Havre campus. As a work-study programme, the cost of the course is covered by the company and the relevant OPCO. The course is recognised by the State and awarded by Scholar Fab.

Continuing professional development

The Continuing Professional Development programme for Customs Declarants enables professionals currently working in the sector to advance their careers, and allows companies to meet their growing needs in terms of customs compliance.

The 285-hour course runs over two years at a rate of four hours of training per week. It is led by customs officials, who draw on, amongst other things, real customs documents and feedback from participants. As with the work-study programme, the course focuses on three main areas: completing customs formalities, advising clients and resolving disputes.
