Description

The cook prepares meals for the entire crew and/or passengers. They oversee the management of food stocks and supplies. They also ensure that safety and hygiene measures specific to a ship’s galley are followed. Depending on the size and type of vessel, there may be a whole team working in the galley.

Qualities and skills

  • Suitability for working at sea
  • Essential basic knowledge of catering
  • Knowledge of and compliance with health and safety regulations

Education and training levels

CAP in Catering, BEP in Catering, Vocational Baccalaureate in Catering

The following are also required: seaman’s book, shipboard cook’s certificate, basic safety training certificate, and basic hygiene training certificate.

Sectors and organisations

A cook may work on a merchant ship, a fishing vessel, a passenger ship or a commercial pleasure craft.
