Using lifting equipment, the forklift operator moves goods around the warehouse. They receive, unload, store, manage and organise products. This role is often combined with that of an order picker.

Qualities and skills

• Physical stamina
• Ability to work under pressure
• Attention to detail
• Ability to operate one or more types of lifting equipment
• Good spatial awareness to optimise the storage of goods according to the space available in a warehouse, lorry or container
• Ability to adapt handling methods to different product types based on weight and strength
• Ability to work as part of a team with order pickers and warehouse operatives, under the supervision of a warehouse manager
• Knowledge of and adherence to health and safety regulations

Education and training requirements

Although no formal qualification is required to enter this profession, it is necessary to obtain the CACES (Certificate of Competence in Safe Driving).

Certain qualifications do, however, make it easier to progress to other roles later on: CAP in Warehouse and Courier Operations; BEP in Logistics and Transport; Bac Pro in Logistics

Sectors and companies

Forklift operators are employed in many sectors, both industrial and commercial, wherever goods are stored, whether in a logistics warehouse, a shop or outdoors on a loading bay.
