Description

Responsible for mapping the seabed and underwater topography (bathymetry) of the harbour basins and surrounding estuaries and coastal areas, the hydrographer collects data through sounding surveys. He produces modelled charts which he constantly updates. As a specialist surveyor and topographer, they work in particular for the dredging department.

Education and training

Two years’ post-A-level study (BTS) in hydrography

Bac + 3 to + 5: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in oceanography, geography or marine sciences Specialised institutions, such as the École nationale des sciences géographiques (ENSG) in France, offer specific programmes in geomatics and hydrography.

The main sectors involved are the port industry and coastal construction, the offshore industry, marine energy production, government hydrographic services (maritime traffic safety) and environmental studies.
