SHIPPING CLERK
The shipping clerk’s role is to meet the general needs of ships and crews whilst they are in port. They provide support on board and act as an intermediary between the various parties to ensure that everything runs smoothly during their stay in Le Havre. They are employed by the shipowner or the shipping agent.
Qualities and skills
- Fluency in spoken and written English (international crews)
- Good interpersonal and mediation skills
- Ability to respond promptly to a variety of urgent requests
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment
- Knowledge of port and maritime procedures
- Availability and flexibility (working hours linked to port calls)
- Organisational skills and the ability to work independently
Educational and training requirements
The profession is open to people with different levels of education. A two-year post-A-level qualification is recommended, such as a BTS in transport management and associated logistics or a specialised diploma (Itip, AFTRAL ISTELI). With a three-year post-A-level qualification: a BUT in logistics and transport management, or a vocational bachelor’s degree in the maritime sector.
