Working mainly in a transport company, the dock handler organises and ensures the smooth running of operations relating to the receipt, sorting and delivery of goods. They supervise a team of warehouse operatives.

Education and training

In-house training is common for this role, but general vocational training courses are also available

Professional Qualification: Warehouse Clerk / Forklift Operator; CAP (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Logistics Operations

A-level equivalent: Vocational A-level in Transport Operations or Logistics Professional Qualification: Warehouse Logistics Technician

Two years’ further education (Bac + 2): BTS in Transport Management and Associated Logistics Professional Qualification: Higher Technician in Logistics Methods and Operations

Bac + 3 Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics and Transport Management

If possible, hold a Certificate of Competence in Safe Driving (CACES) for categories 1 and 3

Sectors and organisations

Dock supervisors are most commonly employed by logistics and transport companies, and may also work in the logistics warehousing sector.
