MILLING OPERATOR

A milling operator is a machinist who shapes metal parts using a machine known as a milling machine. This machine works by removing material from a block to achieve the final shape. The role is carried out in workshops across a wide range of industrial sectors: the automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, rail, shipbuilding and energy equipment sectors, amongst others…

  • Team spirit or the ability to work independently, depending on the requirements of the role
  • Ability to read manufacturing drawings and a good grasp of basic maths
  • Knowledge of tools and machine settings
  • Programming of CNC machines
  • Proficiency in computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software
  • Carrying out quality checks and identifying defects
  • Fitting and assembling parts
  • Troubleshooting machinery
  • Knowledge and application of health and safety regulations

Several training programmes are available to become a milling machine operator, particularly at A-level:

CAP in Industrial Systems Operation, specialising in metal production and processing

Vocational Baccalaureate in Mechanical Production Technology, specialising in bar turning Vocational Baccalaureate in Machining Technology Vocational Baccalaureate in Automated Production System Management Vocational Baccalaureate in Industrial Product Design and Development Technical Baccalaureate in Industrial Technology (STI), specialising in Mechanical Engineering

Certificate of Professional Competence (CCP)
