REFRIGERATION ENGINEER

A refrigeration engineer specialises in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including temperature-controlled containers (reefers). They must be able to interpret technical drawings, select equipment, install refrigeration units, connect circuits, commission systems, carry out preventive maintenance, and comply with safety standards.

  • Identifying the stages involved in refrigeration or air-conditioning installations and drawing up quotations
  • Interpreting installation diagrams
  • Installing and dismantling refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment
  • Checking that installed equipment complies with regulations
  • Identifying the causes and consequences of a malfunction or breakdown in a system and recommending solutions
  • Organising the installation and commissioning of equipment and materials in accordance with the technical specifications
  • Positioning and securing units, condensers, pipes and electrical cables for refrigeration or air-conditioning systems
  • Check that the installed equipment complies with specifications and ensure it is maintained in good working order

Educational and training requirements

A-level or equivalent Vocational A-level in refrigeration and renewable energy Professional Certificates: refrigeration and air-conditioning installer and repairer / installer of heating, ventilation and plumbing systems Professional Qualification: refrigeration service technician (various options)

Two years’ further education (Bac + 2): Higher National Diploma (BTS) in Fluids, Energy and Building Automation / Maintenance of Energy and Fluid Systems

Two years’ higher education (Bac + 3): Numerous Bachelor’s degrees (BUT) in energy transition and energy efficiency; Professional Bachelor’s degree (Licence pro) specialising in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems

Sectors and employers

They generally work on site installations and may also work in a design office. At the Port of Le Havre, refrigeration engineers also find employment with reefer container repair firms.
